Transforming the food system requires more than just passion and intent. You need to move quickly from idea to plan to action--with rigor, empathy, and effectiveness. These complementary skill sets are the hallmarks of design thinking, and this course is vital in strengthening your visioning, planning, and execution capabilities, as you seek to create a positive impact at the intersection of food and health. This dynamic, interactive course is adapted from one of the most popular courses at UC Berkeley, created and led by Dr. Sandhu. Dr. Sandhu is founding partner at the Gobee Group and is a lecturer at UC Berkeley, where he teaches graduate-level, interdisciplinary courses on the innovation process.

Food industry leaders and innovators, product and brand strategists, or other growth leaders who want to effectively apply design thinking to create a business strategy, product, or service solution that addresses the challenges in today’s complex and transforming food systems.


Learning to act deliberately, with clarity and to listen, empathetically are the hallmarks of design thinking and vital to creating a positive impact at the intersection of food and health.

Overview

In this five-week online course, you will work to develop and refine the skills you need to collaboratively engage diverse teams to solve problems facing the food world. You will have the opportunity to work on a specific challenge with an FBS partner organization that is actively working to lead large-scale change in society through food. You will partner with peers, faculty, and course mentors in rigorous conversations and practice sessions that prepare you to apply design thinking methodology in diverse ways. Students have found this course has far-reaching implications that positively impact their personal and professional lives.

By the end of this course, you’ll develop the ability to:

  • apply design thinking to discover and solve problems within the food system;
  • practice field research and strengthen your interview skills;
  • develop and test a hypothesis, connected to a real-life challenge at an FBS partner organization;
  • practice rapid iteration to refine your hypothesis;
  • create smart, succinct action plans; and
  • craft a business strategy and product or service solution that addresses the unmet needs you discovered in your exploration.
